What is Phobia?
Phobia is a type of anxiety disorder that is characterized by an event or circumstances having an unrelated and intense fear.
Like other anxiety disorders, the phobia is associated with something unique.
Peoples who are affected by phobias avoid the situations which are greater than the actual danger is. People who suffer from phobias experience more distress after avoiding such situations.
The Symptom of Phobias:
The most common symptom of phobias is Panic Attack, which includes:
- Shaking or trembling
- Pounding of heart
- Dry mouth
- Rapid speech
- Inability to speak
- High blood pressure
- Breathing problem and Tightening of the chest
Types of Phobia:
Specific Phobia, Social Phobia, and Agoraphobia.
A. Specific Phobia:
includes natural environmental situations, animals, blood, certain injuries, and some specific situations. The most common phobias are the fear of spiders, snake, height, etc. These situations are mainly triggered by a negative experience.
A specific Phobia includes an extreme and constant fear of a particular object or circumstance which is out of proportion with the actual danger. There are several forms of phobias and having a single phobia about more than one thing is not uncommon. Serious phobias may also occur. Common phobias include fear of animals, needles, injuries, blood, clowns, and some other medical procedures.
B. Social Phobia:
is often called a disease of social anxiety. Social phobia can be serious that the simplest activities can cause an individual to panic. Individuals with social phobia frequently go out of their way to avoid circumstances.
symptoms include excessive blushing, sweating, stammering, fast speech, and nausea, etc. Panic attacks can also happen in extreme pressure and pain. Many people who are suffering from social phobia use alcohol and other drugs in social activities to relieve their fears.
is a fear of environments, or circumstances from which we cannot run. The word itself refers to “fear of open space s”. People suffering from agoraphobia fear being struck outside the home or in big crowds. Sometimes they avoid social interactions and love inside their homes.
The anxiety is triggered by fear that if there’s no quick way to escape or get help on time. People who experience panic attacks from agoraphobia lead them to worry about another attack and avoid places where it can happen again. People with agoraphobia have trouble feeling comfortable in public places, crowds, and social gatherings. The fear can be so intense that you need someone ( family member or friends) to go to public places or the fear may be so crippling that you may not be ready for leaving home.
There are some other common phobias:-
Glossophobia- fear of speaking in front of other people.
Acrophobia- Fear of heights.
Hydrophobia- Fear of water.
Claustrophobia- Fear of tight or enclosed spaces.
Aviophobia- Fear of flying.
Dentophobia- Fear of dental procedures or dentist.
Hemophobia- Phobia of blood and injuries.
Arachnophobia- Fear of spiders.
Cynophobia- Fear of dogs.
Ophidiophobia-Fear of snakes.
Nyctophobia- Phobia of darkness.
Autophobia- Fear of being alone.
- CBT- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) may be helpful by encouraging the patient to confront negative thoughts or perceptions by being mindful of their own emotions. CBT is also an important phobia therapy for children and teenagers.
- Systematic Desensitization- This is a technique which is used to cure a phobia, it is a phase in which people slowly became accustomed to their phobia and eventually conquer it.
- Virtual Reality Therapy- It’s is another method that allows phobic individuals to face an entity they fear. It uses virtual reality to construct scenes that would not have been feasible in the physical world.
- Medication- Medicines may also help to control anxiety and anticipation of a specific event or a circumstance. In certain cases of phobia, MAOIs may be helpful. SSRIs(antidepressants)operate serotonin(a brain neurotransmitter) which affects mood.
- Hypnotherapy- It is used alone or sometimes in a combination with systematic desensitization to treat phobias. The root cause of phobia can be discovered by Hypnotherapy. It can also remove the programmed reactions that are caused by various circumstances.
NOTE–: If you have a phobia you must seek proper treatment. It may be difficult to resolve phobias but there is no hope so, you should learn to control your fears with the right therapy and live a positive and fulfilling life.
