What is Cholesterol?

Basically, cholesterol is a kind of waxy fat that is founded in the cells of the body. As commonly said “Excess of everything harms” in the same way excess of cholesterol risk the lives of people. Our body needs some cholesterol in order to work in a systematic manner as cholesterol plays a vital role in digestion. Cholesterol helps to make hormones, Vitamin D, and other important substances which help in digestion in our body.


In case a person suffers from excessive cholesterol then it combines with the other substances which are present in the blood to form plaque. The formed plaque sticks to the walls of arteries which causes Atherosclerosis. This disease leads to various serious problems such as Peripheral arterial disease, Coronary disease, and Carotid artery disease. 

The cholesterol is carried by lipoproteins to the blood cells. The lipoproteins are of different types based on how much protein is present in relation to the amount of cholesterol.

1.) Low – density Lipoproteins (LDL): This is known as bad cholesterol. In case your level of cholesterol is higher due to LDL level then the risk of heart diseases or stroke is more. In case the level of LDL is too high then the buildup of plaque narrows the walls of arteries and hence the risk of blood clots increases. 

2.) High – density Lipoproteins (HDL): This is known as good cholesterol. HDL is less risky than LDL. It helps to prevent cholesterol to form plaque in the walls of arteries. The higher level of HDL helps in the reduction of risk in heart disease, blood clots, and stroke.


It should be remembered that not all kinds of food which contain cholesterol are unhealthy. Some of them are listed below:

1.) Cheese: Though many people combine cheese with high cholesterol various studies have proved that consuming full-fat cheese does not risk the lives of people. 

28 grams of cheeses contains 27 mg of cholesterol. Therefore a study with 162 people proved that the intake of cheese does not higher the level of cholesterol. Consumption of 80 grams of full-fat cheese per day will not lead to an increase of LDL which is considered as bad cholesterol. 

2.) Full fat Yogurt: Yogurt with full fat is a deadly combination of calcium, proteins, B vitamins, magnesium, zinc, potassium, and phosphorus. Full fat yogurt is a milk product that is rich in cholesterol. 

The studies have shown that consumption of full-fat dairy production helps in the reduction of LDL cholesterol. 

3.) Eggs: Eggs are considered to be the healthiest food that is high in cholesterol. There are various people who believe that eggs can cause bad cholesterol. Therefore some studies have shown that eating full of an egg does not harm the body instead it increases the level of HDL cholesterol. 


Some of the ways in which you can control the level of cholesterol:

1.) Lose weight: Losing weight can increase the level of HDL cholesterol which is good for our body. Lowering weight is the best possible way to lower the levels of LDL cholesterol which can adversely cause various diseases in the body. 

2.) Workout: Being physically active has been considered as the most efficient way to stay away from diseases. Doing exercise will not only help humans to keep fit but also lower the level of LDL cholesterol. Practicing any kind of exercise will promote heart health and will develop good HDL cholesterol in the body. 

3.) Quit Smoking: Though smoking is truly hazardous for the body plus it changes the capacity of the body to handle the cholesterol. This happens due to the weakening of the immune system in people who smoke. 

4.) Consume more fiber: Various studies have revealed that consumption of soluble fiber which is precisely found in beans, fruits, and oats can radically decrease the level of LDL cholesterol in the body. 

5.) Undertake Supplements: Consuming supplements have proved that it encourages heart health and recover cholesterol. Supplements like psyllium, coenzyme Q10, and fish oil reduces the risk of growing and maturing heart diseases. 


Cholesterol helps in digestion and acts as an important function in the body but an excess of cholesterol clog the walls of the arteries which can even worse by developing heart risks. 

In case a human body experiences an increase in the level of cholesterol then changes in the lifestyle of a person are utterly important. This is the basis for the change.

Consumption of full-fat dairy products, soluble fiber, and unsaturated fats helps in increasing the HDL cholesterol in the body. In addition to eating habits, exercising, and losing weight even plays a vital role. Even consult your doctor regarding the increasing level of LDL cholesterol in your body.
